Blogster: The Case of the Curious Blog

It’s Sunday! Which means it is time for me to churn the mills of the blogosphere and get something for the massive hoards of readers to sink their teeth into.

THE HOARDS!

Sadly I didn’t get as much done on the Deckard’s Dream as I would have liked this week, still about 2000 components to go overall, but only about 80 caps left on the motherboard! Then it’s time for the more active components, so exciting.

Deckard's Dream Progress
I'm dreaming of robot sheep lately.

Slowly but surely it is coming along! I’ve been a good boy, taking my time. Not soldering too late into the evening. Remembering to use the washroom and ingest nutrition. Hopefully this will lead to less headaches when the thing is finally put together!

In other news, I repaired a module for a friend this week. It was a Tides build that was supposed to be rocking the Sheep firmware. It wasn’t even really Tides-ing very well when I first got my paws on it. But after re-flowing some ICs and flashing the proper firmware, it was as good as new! As payment, I received a “mostly working” Radio Music!

I say “mostly working” because the friend who was it’s prior owner believed there was some crackling/distortion on the output. I turned the output trimmer down a touch and updated the firmware, and I’ve had no issues with it so far.

Radio Music Music Thing Modular
With that classic faceplate and all!

It’s my first time fiddling with a Radio Music, and I’ve got to say I’m very impressed. Beyond its main functionality, the amount of utility this thing brings with alternative firmware is pretty spectacular. Definitely looks like it will be a long term tenant of my rack!

In other news, I’m putting together a “LoFi-nator” pedal for another friend. He’s a sweet boy and has me building it with the intention of giving it to his brother for Christmas. What a good boy!

LoFi-Nator Pedal Kit
Nice little kit!

I purchased the kit from Musikding.de in Germany, and it arrived relatively quickly to my humble little abode in Kanada. I’ll throw together a build diary when this thing is complete with my full thoughts and some action shots, stevetravale.com style!

Other than that, it has been a mostly quiet week on the DIY front. Just fiddling with my NDLR (check out my review here!) and plucking away at my Deckard’s Dream build. You can check the first of my build diary series on that bad boy here!

Here’s something silly. I saw a “course pack” on sale on some website, and this is the picture they chose to illustrate a Network Administration course they were offering.

Modular Networking Course?
Last time I checked, GNS3 was used to simulate networks, not to enhance your wiggling.

I’m a trained Network Engineer, and I do not recall any of my instructors whipping out their modular synth to simulate computer networks. I guess whoever was throwing together the page for this advertisement either :

A – is a secret synth nerd, or

B  – has no idea how networks or synths work

I’m betting on B.

And that’s all she (or he in this case) wrote for this week folks! Will I ever build the Typhoon I’ve been talking about for weeks now? Probably, but not before Mutable Instruments releases Clouds 2 with how long this Deckard’s Dream is taking me.

Stay tuned! Hopefully I will have some more Deckard’s news for you lovely people by next week. I’m also starting to prototype a delay pedal, something gross and glitchy with PT2399 chips, so stay tuned for that as well!

Until next week, keep it samesies, and have a beauty one out there.
